What Is a Bus Roadeo?

When you hear “bus roadeo,” you might picture bus drivers wielding lassos or buses filled with animals. While there may not be any cowboy hats or bulls involved, a bus ROADeo is an exciting showcase of skill and talent. This event brings together top bus operators and maintenance teams from across North America in a hands-on competition that tests expertise, safety, and precision.

This year, UTA and the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) welcomed hundreds of transit professionals from across the industry to compete in a series of exciting challenges. Events included a difficult bus driving course that tested operators’ precision and control, as well as a maintenance competition where mechanics demonstrated their troubleshooting and repair skills under pressure through a variety of real-world simulations and tests.

An event like the Roadeo doesn’t come together overnight — it’s the result of a year-long effort with multiple teams and departments, and the deep expertise of dedicated transit professionals.
