Project Overview
UTA, in partnership with Salt Lake City, is extending the S-Line streetcar approximately 1/4 mile east from Fairmont Station to Highland Drive near Simpson Avenue. The project includes:
- A new streetcar station near Highland Drive and Simpson Avenue
- New traffic signals and pedestrian crossing improvements
- Additional track infrastructure to support system reliability
- Improved access to the Sugar House business district and surrounding destinations
The extension is designed to improve connectivity, expand access to transit, and support the continued growth of the Sugar House area. Construction is anticipated to continue through 2027, with service expected to begin following project completion and testing.

- Increase mobility and access: Provide reliable transit in Sugar House to help reduce traffic.
- Support local growth: Make it easier for people to get to jobs, businesses, entertainment, and new developments in the area.
- Improve connectivity: Link Sugar House to the UTA transit network, making it easier to reach TRAX, FrontRunner, and other destinations in the valley.
- Community and environmental benefits: Improve air quality, reduce driving, and make Sugar House more walkable.
Project Timeline
Construction Update
Construction on the S-Line Extension Project continues to move forward. Over the past month, crews have focused on utility relocations, site preparation, roadway improvements, and other infrastructure work that will support future track and station construction. Community members may notice that the parking lot opposite Cinemark Theatres is currently closed to accommodate construction activities. Nearby businesses south of the parking lot remain open and welcome customers during construction, with parking available behind the businesses.
Upcoming Traffic Changes
Extended Closure of the Simpson Avenue Diagonal Connection
The Simpson Avenue diagonal connection is expected to close for approximately six weeks (August 4 to September 15) to accommodate ongoing construction activities.
Travelers should continue to expect periodic traffic shifts, lane restrictions, and construction activity throughout the project area. Please follow posted signage, allow additional travel time, and use caution when traveling near active work zones.
Ongoing Work
Construction activities will continue throughout the corridor as crews perform utility work, roadway improvements, site preparation, and infrastructure necessary for future track and station construction.
The project team remains committed to working closely with Salt Lake City, local businesses, property owners, and community stakeholders to coordinate construction activities, maintain access, and communicate upcoming impacts.
What to Expect
During construction, residents, businesses, cyclists, pedestrians, and travelers may experience:
- Temporary lane closures and traffic detours
- Sidewalk and pedestrian route adjustments
- Construction equipment and increased activity in work zones
- Periodic changes to driveway, business, or property access
- Noise, dust, and lighting associated with construction operations
Parley's Trail is expected to remain open during construction, although temporary reroutes may occur near active work zones. The S-Line will continue operating throughout construction. Riders may experience brief planned service interruptions as work progresses, and advance notice will be provided before any service changes occur.
